Prince of Wales Island Fishing

Experience Prince of Wales Island Fishing for Yourself

Prince of Wales Island is a fishing paradise. The Island is the third largest in the United States, offering both fresh and saltwater fishing for a variety of species throughout the year. You can drift a ball of yarn for Steelhead, mooch for tackle-busting king salmon, and ply the depths for a trophy halibut – all in the same day.

Two things make Prince of Wales Island truly unique: It’s proximity to the ocean, and it’s easily reached inland waters. When fishing in Alaska, access is frequently an issue, and many places can only be reached by bush plane. Because this Island has more roadways than all of the rest of Alaska combined, there is always a place to wet a line. With 85 productive steelhead streams, and countless waterways to target native cutthroat trout and salmon, it would take multiple lifetimes to fish every available spot.

Ocean Fishing for Trophy Salmon and Barn Door Halibut

When you travel to Alaska for a fishing trip, you have certain expectations. Here at Shelter Cove Lodge, we understand these expectations and do our best to make sure every guest gets the best possible fishing trip. For many, tangling with a big chrome king or a giant halibut is at the top of their list for angling accomplishments. Our goal is to make those dreams a reality.

Our saltwater fishing is unique because we see kings hang around later in the summer and into the fall, and our return of silvers happens earlier than most places in Alaska. We can also target halibut and other bottom fish like red snapper, lingcod, and rockfish throughout the entire season. It is common for our guests to limit out on all available species in a single day.

Freshwater Fishing for Solitude

Many guests prefer to fish the inland waters to test their angling skills, or simply enjoy the solemnity of the outdoors for a more personal experience. Some like to fish the saltwater one day and then fish inland waters the next. Whatever you’re expectations and desires, we are more than happy to make them a reality.

Freshwater fishing for steelhead is most popular in the early spring, but there is another run later in the year. Pink and silver salmon start showing up later in the summer and fall, and provide fast action and a quality challenge whether using fly gear or traditional gear. Native and hatchery cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden are also caught throughout the year.

Fishing is for Anyone that is Serious about the Sport

In many ways, this Island is Alaska’s hidden gem. We simply don’t see the crowds so common elsewhere in Alaska, which is surprising considering we are a relatively short flight away from Seattle. We are eager to show you why our fishing is considered to be some of the most productive in the state, so take some time to browse our site, and plan your next trip with us at Shelter Cove Lodge.
